The legendary cartoonist and reporter Joe Sacco has been criss-crossing the planet for 30 years through his prodigious immersive graphic investigations, interweaving past and present, with a focus on the stigmas of war and its tragic consequences. In this dialogue with international history professor Davide Rodogno and cultural journalist David Brun-Lambert, Joe Sacco talks about being rooted and uprooted, the genesis of a good story, the aftermath of colonialism and the recent protests around the globe. 
His new book, Paying the Land, has just been released recently. 

Summary:

Joe Sacco talks about Malta, his homeland, and his geographical trajectory from Australia to the United States (4'56). He tells us how he perceives his profession (7'), about the impermanence of memory (12') and his way of transcribing inconsistent testimonies. He evokes the subjectivity inherent in journalism (16'). About colonialism (20'), he recounts the implacable power of the system and the reasons why his father was in favour of the British Empire. He then addresses the themes of oppression and resistance in his work (23') and details what he considers to be the fundamental stages of engaged art: criticism and self-criticism. He gives us his analysis of street revolts in Lebanon, Haiti, Hong Kong and France. What would he take in his bag as a refugee? (29’). He recounts the influence that music has had in his life (32') and reveals the people he would like to interview (34'). In conclusion (37'), he reacts to our ritual question about Trame, a work by Martial Mingam representing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which has been shredded and then braided. Le 1er épisode de utopia3 est disponible ! Joe Sacco, auteur de BD et reporter à la bibliographie magistrale (Palestine, une nation occupée, Gaza 1956, Payer la terre…)  illumine ce premier entretien enregistré en anglais. 

Dans ce dialogue au long cours, Joe Sacco parle de Malte d’où il est originaire, et revient sur sa trajectoire géographique de l’Australie aux Etats-Unis (4’56). Il nous raconte la façon dont il perçoit son métier (7’), nous parle de l'impermanence de la mémoire (12’) et de sa manière de transcrire des témoignages non concordants. Il évoque la subjectivité inhérente au journalisme (16’). Sur le terrain du colonialisme (20’), il raconte la puissance implacable du système et les raisons pour lesquelles son père était favorable à l’empire britannique. Il aborde ensuite les thèmes de l’oppression et de la résistance dans son travail (23’) et détaille ce qu’il considère comme les étapes fondamentales de l’art engagé : la  critique et l’auto critique. Il nous livre son analyse des révoltes dans les rues au Liban, Haïti, Hong Kong ou en France. Qu’emmènerait-il dans son sac en tant que réfugié? (29’). Il raconte l’influence qu’a eu la  musique dans sa vie (32’) et dévoile les personnes il aimerait interviewer (34’). En conclusion (37’), il réagit à notre question  rituelle autour de Trame, une oeuvre de Martial Mingam représentant la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme passée au broyeur puis retressée, visible sur le site utopia3.ch
